Classic French Croque-Monsieur

Recipe: Classic French Croque-Monsieur

Ingredients (Serves 2):

  • 4 slices of white bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 4 slices of Gruyère or Emmental cheese
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup béchamel sauce (recipe below)

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Béchamel Sauce:
    • In a small saucepan, melt 1 tbsp butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk constantly for 1 minute.
    • Gradually add milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Set aside.
  2. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • Spread Dijon mustard on two slices of bread.
    • Layer 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of cheese on each.
    • Top with the remaining bread slices to form two sandwiches.
  3. Toast the Sandwiches:
    • Spread softened butter on the outside of each sandwich.
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast each side until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  4. Add Béchamel and Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Place the toasted sandwiches on a baking sheet, spoon béchamel sauce over the top, and sprinkle with extra grated cheese.
    • Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve warm with a side salad or a cup of coffee for a classic French breakfast experience.

Optional: For a Croque-Madame, add a fried egg on top of each sandwich! 🥚🇫🇷

Bon appétit!
