Recipe: Classic French Croque-Monsieur
Ingredients (Serves 2):
- 4 slices of white bread
- 4 slices of ham
- 4 slices of Gruyère or Emmental cheese
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup béchamel sauce (recipe below)
For the Béchamel Sauce:
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- Salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg
Instructions:
- Prepare the Béchamel Sauce:
- In a small saucepan, melt 1 tbsp butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk constantly for 1 minute.
- Gradually add milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
- Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Set aside.
- Assemble the Sandwiches:
- Spread Dijon mustard on two slices of bread.
- Layer 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of cheese on each.
- Top with the remaining bread slices to form two sandwiches.
- Toast the Sandwiches:
- Spread softened butter on the outside of each sandwich.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast each side until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Add Béchamel and Bake:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Place the toasted sandwiches on a baking sheet, spoon béchamel sauce over the top, and sprinkle with extra grated cheese.
- Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve:
- Serve warm with a side salad or a cup of coffee for a classic French breakfast experience.
Optional: For a Croque-Madame, add a fried egg on top of each sandwich! 🥚🇫🇷
